At Life Pacific University, we are preparing students through biblical education in the classrooms to be able to pursue their God-given callings in the Church, the workplace, and the world. Worship Arts and Media students Calvin Welch and Bailey Pepper are already being equipped in this way. Through the course taken this year, Applied Songwriting, Calvin and Bailey wrote, sang, produced, and released their own original music.
The Applied Songwriting Professor, and the Chair of Worship Arts and Media at LPU, Dr. Steven Felix-Jager says “I had Applied Songwriting Lessons with both WAM majors Bailey and Calvin, separately. In their lessons we took two of their songs, polished them, and entirely produced in our campus recording studios. They sat next to me in the producer’s chair and learned the ins and outs of music production as we worked on their own projects. Our goal in the Worship Arts & Media program is to train worship pastors in music, ministry, and theology, and then to allow them the space to flourish artistically in whatever way suits their ministry. A popular route for us is our production concentration where students learn to become singer/songwriters and producers. They’ll leave with the skills to produce their own music and even start and manage recording studios at their churches. With Bailey and Calvin, we were able to launch their solo projects as part of our curriculum. Check out their songs, they’re awesome!”
With her dedication and hard work over the semester, Bailey released her first single as a solo artist entitled “Dirt”. You can listen to her song here.
Bailey shared, “I am a sophomore at Life Pacific double majoring in Biblical Studies and Worship Arts & Ministry. I started writing more seriously when I was in the Songwriting class at LPU. Through learning about songwriting techniques and song production, Dr. Felix and I have been able to produce and publish my song fully”.
With his determination and consistency over the semester, Calvin released his first single as a solo artist entitled “The Cause”. You can listen to his song here.
Calvin says, “This semester, I had the amazing opportunity of putting my songwriting and creativity on wheels—working with industry-standard audio hardware and studio spaces, in order to co-produce an original song. After taking songwriting classes at LPU, I decided to apply the techniques I learned by taking an Applied Songwriting class, where I recorded, arranged, mixed, and eventually published my original song on major music platforms. I would encourage any singer-songwriter to take this step and gain the confidence to share their message with the world”.
It is always encouraging to see students from LPU making a difference, pursuing their passions, and putting their education to practical use that will create a Kingdom impact.
