Private universities usually have higher published tuition than public universities, but that doesn’t mean every private university is more expensive. Life Pacific University is a strong exception.
For 2025–26, the average published tuition and fees at a private nonprofit four-year university is $45,000. LPU’s undergraduate block tuition for 2026–27 is $23,328, nearly half that national private-university average.

The Published Price Isn’t the Final Price
The amount a family actually pays can be reduced through scholarships, grants and other financial aid. At LPU, 97% of incoming traditional undergraduate students received some form of student aid in 2023–24 and 93% received institutional aid directly from the university.
That means families shouldn’t eliminate a private Christian university based only on the tuition listed on its website.
When comparing colleges, look at:
- Grants and scholarships that don’t need to be repaid
- Housing, meals, transportation and other expenses
- Loans included in the financial aid offer
- Personal support and access to required classes
- Career preparation and internship opportunities
A university with lower published tuition may not provide the better value if a student receives less financial aid, limited personal support or fewer opportunities to gain experience before graduation.
